BALCLUTHA Fire in Baker’s Shop Shortly after 12 o’clock on Monday night, Mr J. F. Keach, a taxi driver, noticed smoke coming from the shop of Mr Fincham, baker, in Clyde street. He drove to the Fire Brigade Station, returning with brigadesmen, who quickly subdued the outbreak. The fire originated in a passage at the back of the shop, where the telephone was situated. Before it was extinguished it burned a large hole in the flooring and also part of the adjoining partition. Had the fire not been so opportunely discovered it might easily have spread to the adjoining buildings, with serious consequences.
Main Inch Clutha Drain At the meeting of the Clutha River Trust, proposals were received from Mr Fletcher Roberts, engineer, of Dunedin, for deepening the main Inch Clutha drain to Brown's belt and from there to Marshall’s road, at ah estimated cost of £3600.—1n the course of discussion it was pointed out that it would be necessary to raise a loan to carry out the work, but the sanction of the ratepayers was required before a loan could be raised.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the local members and the engineer to report at next meeting, and that in the meantime application be made to the Government Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of £4OOO.
Rugby Football Referees for Saturday are:—-Second Grade: Clinton v. Toko, at Clinton (Mr J. Handen); Catlins v. Crescent, at Kaitangata (Mr E. Richardson); Union v. Clutha, at Clarksville (Mr S. McAllan). Third Grade: Clutha v. Toko, at Milton (Mr H. Heads). Fourth Grade: Crescent v. Toko, at Milton (Mr H. Heads); High School v. Clutha, at Balclutha (Mr C. G. Clark).
MILTON Milton Bowling Club The sixtyvfirst annual meeting of the Milton Bowling Club was held in the oavilion on Monday night. The retiring president (Mr G. H. Clark) presided over an attendance of 16 members. Moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, he referred to the happy relationships existing in the club. The members of the Ladies’ Club had been, a tower of strength in assisting in raising funds for the club. • The following office-bearers were elected for the incoming year;—President. Mr J. T. Wilson; senior vice-pre-sident. Mr J. Campbell; junior vicepresident. Mr James Gray; secretary. Mr S. Lloyd; treasurer. Mr W. H. Hitchon (re-elected): committee— Messrs H. Wilson, G. Smith (reelected). G. H. Clark, J. Cuff; green supervisor, Mr R. Price (re-elected); auditor, Mr J. J. Lane (re-elected); handicappers and selectors, Messrs T. L. Floyd and P. Davanney; delegates to centre, Messrs J. T. Wilson and H. E. Ransome; Catering Committee. Mr H. Wilson (convener).
Subscriptions were fixejl at the same amount as last year, namely.. £2 (including locker and insurance of bowls) • new members £l. It was decided that the club’s silver buttons for the pairs challenge matches be called the Kennard Memorial Buttons. in honour of the donor, the late Mr T. L, Kennard. The green supervisor was given authority to procure a new shell for a smaller roller, and it was decided to call a general meeting of all members to. discuss the purchase of blazers to ensure uniformity • when playing matches. '
Appreciation of the financial anu general assistance rendered by. the Ladies’ Club was voiced, and it was decided to forward a letter of thanks
Personal
A large number of friends, gathered at the residence of Mr and Mrs F. A. Haynes, Helensbrook, to bid farewell to Mr R. Freeman prior to his departure for the Homer Tunnel, and also to honour him on the approach of his coming-of-age. The evening was pleasantly spent in dancing and cards, with sleight-of-hand tricks by Mr E. Russell. After supper Mr Russell presented the guest of honour with a shaving outfit. The recipient and his father suitably responded. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss M. Robertson and Mr C. Marriott. Miss E. Bell, who has been in chafge of the Milton Railway Refreshment Room since the Government took over about 12 months ago, has been transferred to Gore, and has left to take up her new appointment.
Chimney Fire For the first time for several months the services of the Milton Fire Brigade were required to quell a chimney fire at a residence in Union street about 7 p.m. on Monday. Presentation
At the annual meeting of the’ Milton Bowling Club on Monday night, the president’s prize, a crystal bowl, to the winner of the club’s singles championship. was presented by the retiring president (Mr G. H. Clark) to Mr J. Cuff. Mr Cuff also won the South Otago champion of champions title last year.
TAHAKOPA
School Committee Meeting
Mr J. Stoddart presided over the monthly meeting of the Tahakopa School Committee.
Correspondence was received from the Otago Education Bpard concerning arrangements for additional heating in the extrrf- room at the school. It was decided to have a stove installed in the building. A letter was received from the secretary of the Tahakopa branch of the W.E.A., thanking the committee for assistance in granting the use of a room for meetings. The report of the head teacher (Mr A. Cook) stated that the roll had fallen to 77 but that attendance had been very ’satisfactory. During the month two pupils had left the school and one had been admitted. At the beginning of June, the Cocoa Club had been cotnmenced, and about 40 pupils had a hot drink of cocoa daily. The milk scheme continued satisfactorily, but some of the children found the milk very cold to drink. The school winter games were under way, and a tournament for Gatlins schools would take place on July 15. At the tournament both basketball and football teams would compete.
In connection with the Centennial scheme for tree planting, Mr Cook added, the children had planted 12 flowering cherry trees along the school drive, replacing some shrubs that were not thriving. A supply of Lawsonia trees had been forwarded to the Chaslands School from the school nursery.
