REMARK RETRACTED

INCIDENT IN 1935 ELECTION APOLOGY TO MR FORBES ‘From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON. July 11. A retraction of a remark he had. made about M.’ G. W. Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui) when he wasi contesting the Rotorua seat in 1935 was made by Mr F. W. Doidge (Opposition, Tauranga) when making his maiden soeech during the Ad-dress-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives to-night. “ Reference has been made more than once in the House to remarks which I made in the course of my Rotcrua campaign about the old leaders of the Reform_ and United Parties,” Mr Doidge said. “ I would point out, however, that they had said a good deal about each ether, in former days and it is possible that I could point to another example in shattering remarks passed bv Mr J. A. Lee (Govt., Grey Lynn) about his particular leaders. “I would like, however, to make one retraction,” Mr Doidge added. “During my Rotorua campaign I made a reference to Mr Forbes, but if there is one member of this House who, for his personal qualities, is admired, respected and even loved it is he, and I deeply regret the remark which I made about him on that occasion.”
