DEFENCE OF DOMINION
REFUGEES OFFER SERVICES NOT ELIGIBLE UNDER ACT (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 11. Refugees from several European countries who have made their home in New Zealand have offered their services for the defence of the Dominion. This statement was made to-day by the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones). The Minister said that since the appeal was made for recruits for the National Military Reserve he had had offers of service from Germans, Austrians, Czechs and Hungarians. “A number of refugees who have arrived in New Zealand in the last few months have voluntarily offered their military services to the Dominion,” Mr Jones said. He pointed out, however, that it was contrary to the Defence Act to admit to any section of the defence forces those who were not British subjects by birth or naturalisation. Many of those who had offered to serve in New Zealand had seen military service in their countries of origin, the Minister added. Some of the applicants, in writing to offer, had mentioned that they had held commissioned rank.
