SHIPPING FREIGHTS
NEW CONTRACT RATES REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 11. Information concerning overseas shipping freights is sought by Mr W. J. Poison (Opposition, Stratford) in a question of which he gave notice in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr Poison is asking the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) if he will inform Parliament of the present position in regard to the overseas shipping freights, whether he has received any information from the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) concerning the proposed new contracts, and what effect any increased freight rates, as demanded by the shipping companies, would have upon the guaranteed price for dairy produce. In a note, Mr Poison added that when the negotiations in New Zealand broke down through the increased demands, of the shipping companies it was stated that new freight contracts would be arranged during Mr Nash’s visit to London. The producers had expressed apprehension that increased freights might mean a further reduction in the guaranteed price.
