EMPIRE SHOPPING WEEK
THE WELLINGTON DECISION VALUE OF PROJECT DOUBTED (Special to Daily Times) WELLINGTON, May 16. The question whether, in view of the recent trends in State policy, the present was an opportune time to hold an Empire shopping week in New Zealand was debated at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce this evening. The discussion arose on the receipt of posters issued by the British Empire League, London, reading: " Buy Empire goods this and every week." The week commences on Monday next. The secretary (Mr E. M. Bardsley) said it had been suggested that the time was rather inappropriate for the broadcasting of these posters through the shops. Mr M. G. C. McCaul: It Is always opportune. " The question is whether it is," said Mr H. O. Pittendrigh. "There are peculiar circumstances In New Zealand just at present in regard to overseas products and in regard to locally-manufactured products. For the past month there has been propaganda for the use of locally-made goods, and to some extent this week might clash with that. Mr McCaul: The poster refers to Empire goods which include New Zealand. Mr McCaul moved that the secretary be instructed to distribute the posters to the retailers as early as possible. Mr W. H. Hindle said that there did not seem to be much opportunity of buying other than Empire goods these days. ' The motion was carried on the voices.
