Butler, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, said he had no statement to make on the reported initiative taken by the Vatican in respect to world peace. "As members will doubtless have seen in the press, his Holiness has not made any form of proposals but I can assure the House that the Government would naturally be most sympathetic to any steps which his Holiness may think can usefully be taken with a view to furthering the interests of world peace." THE PRESIDENT'S EFFORTS ANOTHER APPEAL PROBABLE NEW YORK, May 15. The Washington correspondent of the New York Times says that, according to State Department sources, President Roosevelt is at present prepared to issue at an opportune moment, or if another critical situation develops in Europe, another appeal for European peace by suggesting a conference to settle economic problems bv means other than territorial aggrandisement.
