THE INCREASING TAXATION
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —The women and minors of New Zealand have just had Is worth of dictatorship and have not enjoyed it, and yet many of them voted for these people, and this imposition is only a beginning. All our reserves have been disposed of in three years of Labour administration and in a desperate effort to get credit Mr Nash rushes Home, and at a time when Australia will not have anything to do with New Zealand paper currency. 1 should say his chances are pretty remote, and when he returns, or possibly, before that, the screw will be given another twist on wages, etc. Mr Lee and Company are impatient to grasp everything and use the whip, and Mr Nash, Savage and Company say, “ not yet, New Zealand is not quite ready; we must coerce yet a while to get them in our trap: then we can seal it and use the whip.” Some of the more woolly-eyed will disagree with, me and say. “Oh, our Mr Savage would not agree 1o this.” Well, let me remind you that Mr Savage expended some energy in an effort to convince a bewildered New Zealand that the Labour Party is in complete unison and that there is no likelihood of any split. So, he is quite in sympathy with Mr Lee, and Mr Lee is quite proud of his Bolshie theories. We Nationals did our best to make the masses see daylight before the election, but they preferred to swallow Labour’s cunning fairy tales; bait, hook and line, and to-day many are rueing their folly. It is quite unnecessary for me to inform them that their fetters are placed on them by the people they voted for, and therefore they have to accept their own decision in the meantime anyway, and they will do more “squealing” vet for a country cannoi be run with an empty exchequer. During the terrible depression years, which we encountered through no fault of the then New Zealand Government, taxes had to be inflicted, but did Labour remove them when prosperity favoured them? No, and it never intended to. Instead of more and more wages, as Mr Savage hurled over the air until the dying hours of the election, it is more and more taxes, until the Socialists gei complete control. Then we will all be serfs in Labour’s trap and it will be no good “squealing” then. —I am. etc., Nationalist. Oamaru. May 10.
