ST. LEONARDS-BURKES CLUB The final function in the activities of the St. Leonards-Burkes Lawn Tennis Club for the season took place last Thursday evening, when a gocial evening was held for the presentation of trophies. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr “ Jock ” Marr at the piano and Mr Bruce Macdonald with his piano-accordion. The chairman (Mr J. Hill-Scullyl extended a welcome to the Mayor of West Harbour (Mr A, Smith), who is also patron of the club. Mr J. Smith, the president, thanked the teams for their o-operation during matches, and thanked all members of the club for fostering the good-fellowship which had been so evident during the season. The handicap tournament had been closely contested. Miss Barbara Asher had been the successful member in the women’s section, while Mr W. Coutts headed the men, and they were presented with an inscribed silver cup. The chairman then drew attention to a new phase in the club’s activities, and which had been the outcome of the generosity of Mr Bruce and Mr Dawson, who had presented trophies for competition among the school children who were members of the club. Miss Nola Blackwood was successful in the girls’ matches and Master Charles Marr headed the boys’ section. Mr Bruce presented the two winners with their trophies, and congratulated them on their success. The Mayor then spoke of his appreciation at being present on such an occasion, and congratulated the club on the goodwill and co-operation which was evidently a flourishing spirit in all its activities.
