TRIBUTE TO SCOUTING

Viscount Milton, county treasurer for South Yorkshire, speaking as president of the Wentworth' Local, Association, paid a remarkable: tribute to Scouting on his retirement from that office. “ From Scouting,” he said. “ there are so many excellent things to be learned. Scouting brings out in the boy everything that is clean and straight and manly and' sportsmanlike. Vou cannot be in contact with Scouts and Scouters without learning good habits. Not a week goes by but I learn of some act of gallantry or self-sacrifice by a Scout. No employer who has been a Scout ever doubts the trustworthiness of Scouts he takes into his employment, or their readiness and efficiency. - “ It is rather interesting to compare Scouting as a youth movement with those other youth movements established irt-certain countries which shall be nameless. In those countries the voluntary principle is unknown; youth movements are compulsory; they are forced on everybody. There is nothing resembling the Scout code ’of 'honour, and we see the result in these outbreaks of Cruel and uncontrolled'hooliganism. It is. a pity that the. Scout spirit of kindness and helpfulness cannot be imported into those movements. The excellent example set by Boy Scouts to, all, of us. not only in this country, but overseas, makes me prouder than ever of having been president of one of their local associations for two years.” -
