Mr G. G. Slater, who has been spending a holiday in Dunedin, left by the mid-day express yesterday on his return to Auckland.
Mr S. Ritchie is at present In Dunedin presiding over sittings of the Conciliation Council.
Mr Walter Duncan, secretary for Fuller's Theatre Corporation, is at present visiting Dunedin.
A Press Association message from Wellington states that the Minister of Defence (Mr F, Jones) has announced the appointment of Dr A. L. Young, of Wellington, as resident medical officer at Wigram with the rank of flight-lieutenant. The duration of the appointment is five years'from February 15.
Northbound passengers by Union Airways yesterday morning included Mr A. P. Greenfield for Wellington. Southbound passengers by the afternoon plane were Mr A. L. Smith from Palmerston North, Mr H. Bower from Wellington, and Mr H. F. Sincock from Christchurch.
Dr C. D. Halstead, who for the last year has been a member of the resident medical staff of the Timaru Public Hospital, is to sail on February 2 for England, where he will continue his studies in London. It is intended to tender a State luncheon at Wellington on January 24 to prominent overseas politicians who are at present visiting the Dominion. The guests of honour will be the Tasmanian State Treasurer (Mr Edmund Dwyer-Gray), Mr J. McDonald, honorary Tasmanian Minister, Lord Strabolgi, deputy leader of the Opposition and Chief Opposition Whip in the House of Lords.
According to the Gazette notice published last night, Dr R. R. D. Milligan has been appointed a member of the Advisory Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, vice Professor J. Malcolm, who has resigned. A further notice announces that the following have been appointed members of the Survey Board. Messrs G. H. Bullard, M. Crompton-Smith, A. H. Bogle and C. K. Grierson.
A special meeting of the representatives on the Otago and Southland Underwriters’ Association was held in the association rooms to bid farewell to Mr H. V. Lawry, who, for the past eight years, has been local manager for the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., and is leaving for Perth to take up the position of manager for his company for Western Australia. Presenting Mr Lawry with a silver entree dish as a souvenir of his sojourn in Dunedin, the chairman. Mr E. H. Ferguson, congratulated Mr Lawry on his promotion, thanked him for his services to the association, and extended his best wishes for his future happiness and prosperity. The remarks of the chairman were supplemented by many of those present, and endorsed by all. A hearty welcome was extended to Mr J. W, Norrie, who succeeds Mr Lawry as local manager for the company.
