AIR RAID PRECAUTIONS
EVACUATION OF DISTRICTS DANGER AREAS MARKED (Independent Cable Service) LONDON, Jan. 10. The Ministry of Health and the Scottish Health Department have issued details showing which districts in England, Wales and Scotland it is planned to evacuate, and where the people would be sent, in the event of an emergency. Danger areas, with a population of 17,500,000, have been marked down for evacuation in war time. COMPULSORY REGISTER "A USELESS INSTRUMENT" (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, Jan. 10. (Received Jan. 11, at 6.30 p.m.) Sir John Anderson, Lord Privy Seal, in an interview, discussed defence measures. He elaborated in certain respects his recent House of Commons statement. Referring to criticisms he received of the Government's proposals, he said that some people wrote as if the Govern-
ment ought to aim at making war safe for civilians. His opinion was that there was only one way of making civilians safe, and that was avoidance of war. Their aim should be, if there was war, to emerge from it with the least possible hurt to the nation, but to emerge victorious. Dealing with the proposals for a compulsory national register, he expresssed the opinion that it would be a useless instrument. The issue of compulsory training was never before the nation. A compulsory register would be utterly useless as a means of obtaining recruits.
