ARRIVAL IN LONDON
MR AND MRS GROVER ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME LONDON, Jan. 8. § Mr and Mrs Grover were enthusiastically welcomed on their arrival in London. Mr Grover said that he discovered that the flight was unnecessary, because the Soviet authorities had arranged for his wife to go to England within six months. Mr Brian Grover was convicted of illegally entering Russia, and was fined 1500 roubles, the alternative being a month’s imprisonment. The confiscation of his aeroplane and his expulsion from Russia for five years were also ordered. After a daring 650 miles unplanned flight from Stockholm in a 70 horse-power sports plane, Mr Grover was arrested at Staritza in November. The pilot flew Mr Grover from England to Stockholm, where, during the pilot’s temporary absence, Mr Grover hastily took off, facing severe winter weather with little flying experience, to bring back his Russian wife, who for a year had been unable to obtain a permit to leave Russia, while he was unable to secure a Soviet visa to go to Moscow. Mr Grover undertook the adventure in order to draw the attention of the highest authorities to his case.
