AN INTERESTING VISITOR

SUSANA WITH HARDWOOD MANNED BY FILIPINO CREW An interesting visitor to the port of Otago is the Philippine registered vessel Susana, which arrived on Sunday with a crago of Australian hardwood. The ship, which has a tonnage of 5929, is manned exclusively by Filipinos, and was chartered by Millar’s Timber and Trading Company (Overseas), Ltd. Her master is Captain Miguel Lasa, a Filipino, who has under him a crew of 52 men of the same nationality. This is Captain Lasa’s first visit to New Zealand, but he and his officers speak perfect English, the influence of American contacts in the Philippines, and also in the United States, which the ship has frequently visited, being responsible for this. One thing that catches the eye of the visitor to the vessel is the presence of two flags on the iackstaff at the stern, namely, the Stars and Stripes, and the Philippines flag. Although the Filipinos hope eventually to be granted independence by the United States, they are still actually under American dominion, and as a result the American flag is flown over the ship’s national emblem.
