TRIP TO EUROPE
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE TOUR
INTERESTING REPLIES TO QUESTIONNAIRE
The trip to Europe, organised by the Women’s Institute, is still growing. There are now 50, including an increasing number of husbands, who intend to go on the tour. Inquiries as to what people most wanted to see and do brought forth an interesting variety. Rural England and gardens were the most popular, but hopping in Kent (this from a Nelson hop-grower), a ship on the stocks (a woman, strangely enough), a play in production, pictures and antiques, “ farm women like me who do their own work.” and (this from several) “ most of all. our Royal Family.” Lord and Lady Bledisloc have kindly offered to show the party over their estate, Lydney Park. From Hampshire comes a private invitation to bring several members down for the Aldershot tattoo as the guests of the writer. The hostess also offers to arrange for visits to woollen mills, etc., at Bradford, and suggests it might be possible to arrange to see over a royal estate. This woman once farmed in New Zealand-piebald ponies and Siamese cats wore her specialties—and she hopes some husbands will go to see the farms in her district.
Abroad it is hoped to arrange for members to meet members of similar country women’s societies, such as the Association Feminines Rurales de France. Time will be limited, but it may be possible to arrange a visit to a French farm or to see Swiss cheese in the making.
