TUAPEKA SHOW

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE FINE PARADE OF CLYDESDALES WELL-FILLED SHEEP PENS In brilliant sunshine, typical of Central Otago weather at its best, the Tuapeka Agricultural Society held its thirty-sixth annual show yesterday at Lawrence. Viewed from all angles, the fixture was undoubtedly the most successful yet held by the society, and it will not be greatly surprising if, next year, it is found necessary to increase the facilities on the showground for the parading of stock. Throughout practically all sections, entries showed a marked increase over 1937 when the show was revived after a lapse of a few years. The quality of the exhibits was an outstanding feature, crossbred sheep, Clydesdale draughts, and light horses being par ticularly fine displays. Although the bulk of the exhibits came from local competitors there were a few entries received from Milton. Roxburgh, and Moa Flat. and. with few exceptions competition in all classes was fairlv keen. Holiday visitors from all around the district assisted in making the attendance a record one. the approximate number of nersons to visit Simpson Park during the day being in the vicinity of 800. At £35, the gate receipts showed an increase over the previous year by £5. By the aid of a sound system those on the ground were kept appraised of the progress of the judging, this new feature being greatly appreciated by the spectators Although there was no untoward delay in the judging it was not until close on 7 o’clock that the last of the light horses was driven out of the show ring. The society made every endeavour to make its show an attractive one, and it succeeded in doing so but on future occasions it would be well advised to provide better facilities for the judges in the various sections so as to expedite the announcing of the awards. The striking feature of the show was the outstanding exhibit of crossbred Sheep and the excellent entries m the section. The lambs were easily the best lot seen at the Tuapeka ground and compared very favourably with many pens seen at recent metropolitan shows. The Sheep Pens Well-filled sheep pens kept the judges busily engaged throughout the afternoon. As usual, there was but a meagre display of purebreds. but the few that were put forward were of good quality. Fat lambs, both Southdowns and long wools, were seen in good condition, and nearly all of them were worthy of tickets. The freezing class was considered by the judge to be equal in quality to that seen at the last Christchurch Show. Once again Mr W. F. Labes, of Whenuakoa captured the majority of the red tickets. He showed the champion Romney Marsh ram. and had matters fairly much his own wa.v in the crossbred classes. The Cattle Rings The cattle rings comprised the poorest section of an otherwise outstanding show, Jerseys were about the only class brought forward and the quality was not much better than the average showing of the breed. In certain classes, however, competition was fairly keen, although entries were not numerous. The ticket for most points in crossbred cattle was gained by Mr P. F. Robertson who also secured the championship award for his two-year-old Ayrshire bull, the only entry in its class. Draught Horses For an up-country show there was a creditable exhibition of Clydesdales The various classes were much better filled than at many of the recent shows held throughout the province. The gelding classes were exceptionally good, and. in numbers, eclipsed anything previously shown in Otago this season, The female classes were not so numerous, but the quality of the exhibits was high nevertheless. Messrs Lowery Bros., of Glenore exhibited a fine beast, and claimed the female championship award, and Mr A. C. •Leary, of Evans Flat, showed a fine mare In the up to 15cwt class to collect the red ticket. For so young an exhibitor, Mr Leary had a successful day securing awards in the sheep and dog sections as well. In the opinion of the judge, hiany of the younger animals would have been the better for a little more handling. The backwardness of the season and the scarcity of farm labour were no doubt responsible for the lack of attention which they showed. Light Horses and Ponies Light horses were to the fore at the show, and some fine specimens were seen in the various classes. Miss K. Wood, of Beaumont, a prominent horsewoman at Otago shows tor several years past, and Mr R. S, Bartlett, of Waitahuna, were prominent in different events, and, at the conclusion, they tied for the honour of most points in the section. Mils Wood secured the red ticket for the best turned out hack end the award for the best paced hack, but Mr Bartlett headed her off in the buggy mare or gelding class In the competitions there were some first class exhibitions of jumping, which were greatly nporeciated by the spectators. In the high jump for which there were only two entries Mr L. R. James, of Dunedin riding for Messrs Crawford Bro r . ol o arer’ bar at 4ft 4in, and looked capable of bettering this oerformance had he been required to do so.
