OBITUARY
MR A. E. GASCOIGNE The death occurred on Saturday of Mr Albert Ernest Gascoigne, who, as partner in the firm of Messrs Solomon, Gascoigne, Solomon and Sinclair, occupied a prominent position in legal circles in Dunedin during the past 40 years. Mr Gascoigne was born in the Tuapeka district 72 years ago, and received his early education at the Lawrence District High School, where he won an Otago Education Board senior scholarship. He then went to the Otago Boys' High School for three years, and matriculated in 1884. The same year he entered Mr Solomon's office, and four years later passed his final solicitor's examination. In 1900 Mr Gascoigne joined the firm as a junior partner, and retained his connection with it until his death. Mr Gascoigne took a keen interest in rowing and tramping in his younger days, and occupied prominent positions in the Otago Rowing Association, the Dunedin Boating Club, and the Otago Tramping Club. Later in life he took up bowling and recently occupied the position of president of the Otago Bowling Club. He is survived by his widow, two sons —Mr B. Gascoigne (Sydney) and Mr J. A. Gascoigne (Dunedin)—and a daughter, Mrs N. Gow (New Plymouth). DR M. C. F. MORKANE (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 26. The death has occurred of Dr Michael Charles Frederick Morkane, a noted gynaecologist. Dr Morkane was born at Port Chalmers in 1877, and educated at the Christian Brothers School, Dunedin, and Otago Medical School, from which he graduated in 1901. He was a specialist of world-wide experience. Last year he was awarded an honorary fellowship of the British College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. His only brother is Monsignor Morkane, administrator of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. and the only son is Mr Charles Morkane, a student at the Otago Medical School. FATHER PATRICK FAY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 26. Father Patrick Fay. S.M., died at Little Company of Mary Hospital yesterday, aged 65, after an illness which extended over many years. He was educated at St. Patrick's College, where he was a distinguished scholar and athlete. His record for the hop. step, and jump was unbeaten for 25 years. He studied for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary's. Hawke's Bay, and was ordained in 1896. He was first stationed at Blenheim as curate of that parish, and was later priest at Temuka. He returned to Blenheim to take charge of the parish, and from there he went to Mount St. Mary's as procurator. His next post was as parish priest at Nelson, but failing health made it difficult for him to continue a work of such responsibility, and he became assistant priest at Napier, and then at Hastings. He then returned to Blenheim, from where he came to Wellington for his last illness.
