PIGEON RACING
DUNEDIN HOMING CLUB The Dunedin Homing Pigeon Club flew the final races of the old birds' racing season last Saturday. The first was held from Ashburton. the birds being liberated at 10.30 a.m. Thirty-two birds from 16 lofts faced a southerly wind, and conditions were all against a fast flight. The winning birds completed the 153 miles in 4hr Ismin at an average velocity of 1067 vards per minute. The conditions of the race were that each member had two birds entered, and the best average velocity of the two birds decided the result. - The following were the successful owners:— D. Cunningham's Echo and Pot Luck 1 J. Taylor's Wildwood Lass and Close Call 2 M. Anderson's Princess and Flying Fox 3 R. Fitzgerald's Carver Doone and False Note 4 J Scoullar's Ace Pot and Mimic .. 5 The club also flew a race from Hicks Bay (710 miles), the longest pigeon race in New Zealand. It. calls for stamina and endurance on the part of the birds. In this race D. Cunningham repeated last year's performance by winning, his being the only two birds arriving home in race time. Twenty-six birds from eight lofts were liberated at 5.30 a.m. on Saturday and flew into some bad weather in the Wellington district, which put them down.
