DRUG ADDICTS IN BRITAIN

Of the 620 drug addicts in the United Kingdom known to the Government, 132 were members of the medical profession. This is revealed in the report of the British Government to the League of Nations on the traffic in opium and other dangerous drugs during 1937, issued recently. The addiction to narcotic drugs is not prevalent in England, the report stated. Of the known addicts, 300 were men and 320 women, including one dentist, five pharmacists, and two veterinary surgeons. Of these, 72 per cent, were addicted to morphine and 8$ per cent. to cocaine. No evidence has been forthcoming of any organised illicit traffic in the United Kingdom during last year. Several attempts to import small quantities of drugs by letterpost were discovered. Most of the seizures by the Customs of illicit drugs were found in the possession of Chinese but on a cross-Channel steamer a British nurse was discovered with 50 pellets ofopium :
