FACIAL ECZEMA
VETERINARIAN PRESCRIPTION GIVEN TO FARMER ON SHIPBOARD CLAIMED TO BE A CURE (Per United Press Association) PUKEKOHE, Nov. 4. When Mr W. Finlay, a Mauku farmer, returned from a Dominion world tour, he brought with him what may prove a discovery of national importance—the prescription of a preparation claimed to be an infallible cure for eczema in stock. On board the cruise ship Orcades, Mr Finlay met a Polish Jew refugee, a veterinary surgeon named Dr t. Dukatenzeiler, who was travelling to Melbourne. In the course of a discussion on stock troubles, Mr Finlay mentioned the loss suffered by New Zealand farmers through the eczema scourge, and related the symptoms and results, which the doctor recognised as by no means uncommon in Central Europe and one which he had met with on many- occasions. Dr Dukatenzeiler said he thought it extraordinary that no curative methods could be devised in the Dominion, and was astounded when he was told the extent of the ravages of the disease throughout the Dominion. He said the disease originated in a beast's liver and spread throughout the system, affecting the udder and eyes. Dr Dukatenzeiler said he had found a certain preparation to be most effective, and this was a recognised cure for the disease in Central European countries. According to Mr Finlay, the doctor seemed confident that his preparation would "do the trick," and when he left the ship at Melbourne he gave Mr Finlay two prescriptions, one for a drench to be given internally and the other for a lotion to be applied to the beast's eyes if inflammation or blindness set in. Mr Finlay intends to have the prescriptions made up, and if they seem effective, he will submit them to the Department of Agriculture. He remarked that he would not praise nor condemn the preparations until they were tested, and he was not prepared to think the doctor knew more than did our own experts.
