C. Charhberlain, Brookside, Canterbury. The herd was founded in 1886, and all the present herd trace to the cow Canairy, imported to New Zealand in 1881 by the late Mr William Boag, of Burnsidel Outstanding sires have been used -throughout the history of " Thornsleigh," all of them being either imported bulls or their sons. At present leading the herd is the imported Princeton Lomond, bred at the Prince of Wales's Canadian ranch. Princeton Lomond was Royal Champion in 1934 and 1936, and will assuredly add to his honours. Other famous sires include Langley Master 2nd, Who has sired many prominent prize*wini.ers, among them being Thongsleigh Master 2nd, winner of 11, championships, and a great breeding bull. -The sale will be conducted by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd.,

and the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., in conjunction. Catalogues will be forwarded promptly on request, and the time of the sale has been arranged to suit the convenience of Cup Week visitors to Christchurch. Hum-dram and Hard Work On the subject "Peopling the Dominions," Mr M. G. Baroniase writes from Tauranga to the Sunday Times, expressing his views, as an Englishman and an emigrant with 11 years' experience of New Zealand and Australia. - A previous correspondent to the paper named Mr Valentine Williams, had said "the Empire is crying out for settlers." Mr Baroniase thinks that is a statement open to doubt, and he proceeds: "Certainly in this country and over the Tasman Sea I never found any real popular demand for new settlers. New Zealand has, at a season of unusual prosperity, 35,000 persons virtually unemployed; Australian figures are higher. And parents to-day are faced with a problem in placing in suitable jobs their children leaving school. Why, then, should this part of the Empire .cry out for settlers? Assuming immigration within the Empire connotes going on the land (as it has done in the past, though we may have to change that conception), why should young men of physical audacity and adventurous bent (to quote from Mr Williams's letter) necessarily make good settlers? Fprming nowadays out here is a very hum-drum affair involving much personal hard work. The hazards are provided by Nature: adventure is in the way of loans and bank overdrafts." THE ROYAL SHOW OTAGO BREEDERS SUCCESSFUL SOUTHDOWNS AND CORRIEDALES ALLANDALE CLYDESDALES ON TOP The fifteenth annual show of the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand at Hamilton at .the end of last week was a general success. Financially the outcome of the exnibition was highly satisfactory, and there was a fairly representative display of most classes of live stock bred m New Zealand. The cattle sections were particularly strong, and an unusually high standard of quality was found n the dairy sections, which, in the view of an Otago breeder who attended the show.-have been equalled in recent years only at the Invercargill Royal Show. Certain breeds of sheep..notably the Downs and Romney Marsh, were outstanding in both numbers and quality, but most other breeds were represented by only small showings. Some of the finest sheep penned came from the South Island. ■•■'■ S The same applied to Clydesdale horses, which made up a good allround section. Both male championships were won by South Island breeders, and the bulk of the-major awards in the female section also went to a South Island stud. A large ehtry of light horses provided an exceptionally varied and interesting programme of ring events. Mr H. J. Andrew's Punchbowl Southdowns The success of Mr H. J. Andrew (Maheno) with his large entry of Southdowns from his Punchbowl stud follows up equally striking successes at last year's Royal Show. The prominence gained by this stud against the keenest competition from North Island flocks stamps it "as definitely one of the finest Southdown flocks in the Dominion; Mr Andrew's supremacy in this field has long been undisputed in the South Island, but it is only of recent years that he has met the best North Island breeders on their own ground and defeated them. Not content with securing both male and female championships, he also took the reserve championship for ewes, and seven first prizes in the seven classes in .which he competed in the open Southdown sectiop. Both rams and ewes made the same impression on the judge, and his. successes were evenly distributed over all classes. His awards also included the Southdown Sheep Society's medals for champion ram and ewe and for the best twotooth ram in the open classes, the Southdown Society's Challenge Cup. which he also won last. year, and the Southdown Sheep Society 'of England's Challenge Cup for the best ram exhibited at the Royal Show. This is the third occasion in succession that Mr Andrew has won this coveted trophy, and it now becomes his property. Bushey Park. Corriedales ' The Bushey Park Estate of the late J. A. Johnstone (Palmerston). was no less successful in . the Corriedale section, but no opposition was encountered from North Island breeders. The judge, Mr J. K. Ensor (Rangiora), commented in appreciative terms on the quality of the Otago sheep, and said they were a beautifully even and typical lot. The Bushey Park contingent comprised only rams, and th*; judge awarded first, second and third prizes, as well as championships in classes for aged rams, two-tooth rams, ram hoggets in the wool, and shorn ram hoggets. The Bushey Park sheep were excellently brought out and maintained the high standard set by this flock at Royal Shows for the past 15 years. Allandale Clydesdales Pride of place in the Clydesdale section was taken easily by the Fairlie breeder, Mr Andrew Grant, who was represented by a large team of horses from his well-known Allandale stud. He was prominent in all the classes which he contested, and his list of successes with imported stock and younger animals of his own breding was a formidable one. His imported sire, Strathmore Streamline, which was champion at the previous Royal Show last year, again annexed the stallion championship, with another South Island horse, Mr James Petrie, jun.'s (Canterbury) Thorn Print, a fine type of three-year-old, as reserve champion A two-year-old colt, Allandale Dunlop by the imported sire Dunlop's Re nown, took the red ticket for Mr Grant in his class, -and another Allandale youngster was placed first in the class for yearlings. Mr Grant won the fema'le championship with his celebrated showring mare Craigie Ella, and was also placed first in the clash for the best New Zealand-bred mare. He was first and second in the dry mare, any age, class, and he won first prize in the three-year-old filly class with Allandale Iris. Allandale Gladys took the red ticket for him in the class for two-year-old fillies, and he was second to the Moore Hunter Estate (Hawera) in the yearling filly class. Mr Grant was also first in the group classes, and also showed the best of a good display of four-vear-old geldings.
