THE TELEPHONE SERVICE
TO THE EDI.TOB Sir, —The official statement In reference to my letter on the matter of the telephone service is not convincing. It reads more in the nature of a "cover-up” than of anything else. If under the old manual system a click indicated a listener-in. what does a click indicate under the automatic system? Both systems are operated electrically, and the doings of the listener-in must be evident in the same way. Many subscribers firmly believe that listening-in at some of the telephone exchanges is prevalent. The discipline of this service under the Labour Government calls for drastic action to save it from serious canker. If the present Government is unable to cope with this important and serious matter, may we not expect to see further breakdowns in discipline in other directions in the public service?—l am. etc., National Dunedin, October 14.
