PILOT COLLAPSES
BOARDING THE ROTORUA (From Our Own Correspondent) (By Air Mail) LONDON, Aug. 11. While boarding the New Zealand Shipping Company's Rotorua, Mr David Jenkins, aged 65, a Bristol Channel pilot, of Newport, fell into the sea between Breaksea Point and Nash Point, and was drowned. When he fell he was halfway up the ship's ladder, and it is believed that he had a seizure. The pilot cutter and the Rotorua put out boats,, and. although a search was made for ,somp hours, no trace could be found of the body. Mr Jenkins had held a pilot licence for nearly 35 years, and for a number of years before that he had been an apprentice pilot, making his length of service in the channel nearly 50 years. He was due to retire in two years time.
