“UTOPIAN COLONY”

AUSTRALIAN VENTURE SETTLEMENT ON PACIFIC ISLAND HOBART, June 2. (Received June 2, at 11.40 p.m.) A yacht is being prepared here to take the first colonists to a “ Utopian colony ” in Marqueses Islands in the Pacific. The advance party consists of Mr F. Briggs and his wife and Mr T. Alexander, of Hobart. Replies have been received to circulators about the project from New Zealand, South Africa and America. Mr Briggs, who was formerly in the photographic section of the Australian Air Force, said the settlement at Nukuhive in Marquesas would be open to people tired of the strain of civilised life. It was not intended that the settlers should go native. On the contrary, the amenities of civilisation would be available. Nukuhiva Island is about 14 miles long. It is mountainous, richly wooded and fertile.
