CHORAL SOCIETY
TO-NIGHT’S ENTERTAINMENT Mr Alfred Walmsley will direct the Dunedm Cnoral Society’s concert to be presented in the Town Hall tonight. The present choir apparently shows as much keenness in its work as did the pioneers who commenced the society’s activities 75 years ago, and this evening’s performance should be a memorable one. To provide a fitting opening for this anniversary year the society has chosen a programme featuring in the main two works that should appeal to all musical tastes. The main presentation is a musical version of the Maori legend of “ Hinemoa." The composer is Alfred Hm. and in “ Hinemoa ” he has given himself full scope. The beauty of the score, the vigorous, colourful choral work, the masterly orchestration, and the lovely solos and duets for soprano and tenor should make it the most popular item of the evening. Mrs N. R, Henderson and Mr James Hinton will be the soloists. Another piece of interest is Coleridge-Taylor’s “ Bon Bon Suite.” which is being performed for the first time in Dunedin, It is as carefree as its title suggests, and the society has secured the services of Mr Arthur Lungley to take the solo part. In addition to the two choral works, there is the added attraction of the first public appearance here of the New Zealand boy violinist, Alan Loveday It is now Dunedin’s turn to appreciate the artistry of the nine-year-old prodigy, whose reputation, even at this early age, is a considerable one. He will present an interesting group of solos, and will be accompanied by the society’s pianist. Miss Mavis Macdonald. Particulars are advertised
