OTAGO RUGBY UNION

COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT

The weekly meeting of the Committee of Management of the Otago Rugby Union was held last night. The president (Mr A. C. Haynes) occupied the chair.

Permission was granted the ZingariRichmond Club to send a team to play at Lawrence on June 6. TRANSFERS

The following transfers were granted:—?. Davis from the Cromwell Club to Alhambra; J. Tackney from Crescent (Kaitangata) to Alhambra; W. Thomson Berwick to West Taieri; K. T. Wroblenski from Becks to Southern; and S. Mosley from Miller’s Flat to Alhambra. TONGA PARK

Mr D. C. Jolly reported that he and a representative from the Football Association had waited on the Reserves Committee of the City Council to protest against the allocation of the grounds at Tonga Park to both bodies. The Hockey Association had been granted four grounds instead of three, and the other two bodies had been pushed on one side. They had informed the committee that unless the two bodies received better treatment they would consider leaving the ground. Mr Jolly said that the deputation had received a sympathetic hearing, and had been informed that the committee would visit the ground and look into the position. Their report would be submitted in due course to the Rugby Union and the Football Association. REFEREE ABUSED The referee (Mr H. J. Hendrick) and G, Wilson appeared before the committee in connection with a charge by the referee that after the game between Port Chalmers and ZingarlRichmond at Port Chalmers Wilson had used abusive language to him. Mr Hendrick stated that Wilson had told him that he was a cheat, and had played overtime. It was pointed out that referees had to be protected, and it was decided to suspend Wilson, who was a line umpire during the game, for two playing Saturdays, an amendment that he be suspended for four playing Saturday’s being defeated. BAY OF PLENTY TEAM Mr D. A. Cahill, secretary of the Vincent Sub-union, wrote stating in regard to the match between Vincent and Bay of Plenty that there had been nothing before the Vincent Sub-union, either verbal or by correspondence, in respect to the match, and that whoever was responsible for having the fixture arranged he had not been notified. He had only seen the fixture in the Otago Daily Times, and that was all he knew about it. Permission was granted to play the match at Omakau on Wednesday. June 8. It was also decided ihat the committee did not approve of matches being arranged as this one had been. The match should have been arranged through the Otago Union. "IN THE DARK ” The following letter was simply " received ”by the committee: —“ It is bad enough paying to see football these days in daylight, but when it comes to seeing 75 per cent, in daylight and 25 per cent, in the dark it is not much good. I expect someone will now wake up that it is dark now at a quarter past 5, and suggest playing at a quarter to 3, which, with starting at 10 to 3 and stoppages, is not much better than starting at 3 o’clock. I remember last year some of the quarter to 3 matches finished in the dark.” AN APPRECIATION Mr H. Williamson, referee in the Alhambra-University D match, wrote stating that J. Baird, of the Alhambra team, had had the misfortune to fracture his right leg. The game had been played in an exceptionally clean and friendly manner, and he desired to express his appreciation of the prompt and efficient manner in which the player had been attended to by the representative of the St. John Ambulance and the members of the Alhambra Club. The letter was received. SUB-UNIONS’ FIXTURES Messrs Spedding, Jolly, and Pearson were appointed a sub-committee to go into the question of dates for the playing of the Otago sub-unions’ team in Dunedin, a letter having been received from the Southland Union asking if the date for the Southland sub-unions’ team to play the Otago sub-unions’ team in Dunedin should be changed from July 16, as previously arranged, to July 23. CONDITIONS OF JUNIOR FOOTBALL

Mr A. Grant reported that at a meeting of the Junior Advisory Committee the question of the heavy defeats being inflicted on other teams in the lower grade competitions had been discussed. The suggestion had been made that some method might be adopted to prevent big youths, although they were within the age limit, playing in the lower grade teams. In the discussion which followed it was stated that, although there would probably be a difficulty in rearranging the matches, it was not in the interests of the game that the present position should continue.

It was decided that the Advismy Committee and the Flag Competition Committee should meet and see if a method could be devised for a better grading for junior football. STUDS ON BOOTS

Mr C. G. Gibbons brought up the question of players playing in boots with too long and too sharp studs. He said that a Third Grade player had shown him his leg, which showed cuts three inches long “ The game was not a battlefield, and players did not want to be cut to pieces," said Mr Gibbons D: Perry said that he had attended a boy who had received a cut three inches long and in to the bone on his leg. The injury had been inflicted by the stud on an opposing players boots. , , It was decided to write to the clubs and draw their attention to the complaints. It was explained that referees had authority to request a player to have his studs put in order, and if he did not do so. to prevent him playing.
