FISHERMAN’S CATCH

RIFLES AND REVOLVERS X LONDON, May 16. One of the strangest of fishing stories comes from the Mendip Hills, in Somerset. When fishing for pike in a quiet pool at Stoneaston Park, Captain Baldwin set his rod at lunchtime and left. Returning later, he found his hook fast in something, which he lifted out inch by inch. It was a brand new rifle. Going on fishing. Captain Baldwin caught another. Then he and his host, Commander Hippisley, notified the police, who dragged the pool. A rope and hook brought up 27 English and nine German service rifles or revolvers, four shotguns, four sporting rifles, four automatics and one Mauser pistol. Commander Hippisley stated that he believed the arms had been dumped after the issue of a police order asking people to hand in unlicensed firearms.
