COLLISION ON CROSSING —» — MOTORIST SEVERELY INJURED (Per United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., May 27. A motor driver named Sanson, residing at Otorohanga, suffered grave head injuries, including a fractured skull, when his light car was struck by the express train at the Cook street crossing shortly after mid-day. Eyewitnesses state that Sanson was driving at a leisurely pace when his attention appeared to be diverted towards the shunting yards, and he failed to notice the approach of the express. CYCLIST'S DEATH COLLISION WITH CAR (Per United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, May 27. Injuries which subsequently proved fatal were received last evening by Percy Jago Israel, when riding a bicycle. He collided with a motor car driven by J. A. Walker, of Bluff The car had just turned into Forth street from Nith street. Mr Israel struck the radiator, and received a fracture of the skull and severe abrasions. He was removed to hospital where he died at 11 o'clock. Mr Israel, who was 55 years of age. was well known in Southland He was chief clerk in the Invercargill office of Dalgety and Co.. Ltd.. by whom he had been employed for 35 years, about 25 of them being spent in Invercargill. He was also widely known as a bowler, and was a former president of the Southland Bowling Club and Southland representative. At one time he held the champion of champions singles title. He leaves a widow and one son, Mr George Israel, lecturer at the University of Tasmania. Hobart. DROWNED IN AVON RIVER A THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILD. ► (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, May 27. A three-year-old child, George Ivan Ray. the only son of Mr and Mrs G. L. Ray of 28 Kotare street, Riccarton, was drowned in the Avon River this afternoon. The child was last seen at 3.10 playing at the back door of its home, which is about 40 yards from the river. When found to be missing a search was made and the body was found by the boy's grandfather Mr J D Mathieson, who was visiting the house, at 3.30 on a mud bank in the river about six chains from the house. A doctor was called but the child was dead It appears that the child got into the river by crawling under 9 wire netting fence at the back of the house STRUCK BY~FALLING TIMBER While engaged in the construction of the concrete wall at the Leith yesterday afternoon William McMillan, a middle-aged married man, who resides at 17 Cross street, was struck on the head by falling timber He was admitted to the Dunedm Hospital at 4.30 Buffering from concussion.
