SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO
One of the cleanest cakes of gold yet brought into Queenstown (says the “Wakatip Mail” of the 11th inst.) was yesterday to be seen at the Bank of Otago. It was the produce of the Scandinavian Co.’s reef; the weight of it being 321 ounces, obtained from about 200 tons of stone. . . . From the quality of the stone being crushed they reckon in ten days on having another cake equally as large as the one just brought down. The Sydney race-meeting was postponed for a week in consequence of heavy rains, which extended over the whole east coast of the Australian Continent, the river at Brisbane having risen forty feet, submerging stores and bridges. The races, however, started on the 3rd inst.. There were 7000 people present, and some of the best horses in the Southern Hemisphere ran. . . The clipper barque Velocidadc, the last wool ship of the season, is expected to complete her loading to-day, and will sail for London during the week. She has on board 1142 bales of wool, and a large quantity of sundries. Amongst the latter are two cases of Moa bones, and two cases of plants sent from Wellington for the Royal Botanical Gardens, Glasgow.. She will also have upwards of 65000 z. of gold, shipped by the Bank of New South Wales.
We observe, oy the Melbourne papers, that, though the accounts are not yet complete, the sum realised by the Beaumont benefit concert is between L 520 and L 550, an unprecedented amount to result from a single performance in Victoria. The “ West Coa?t Times ” is informed on good authority that instructions have been received from Christchurch to suspend the public works in Westland, even to the repairs required on the wharf. Should this prove to be correct, the next session of the Canterbury Provincial Council is expected to be a stormy one. GOLD STATISTICS.
