CYCLING

RACE FOR AMATEURS The Dunedin Amateur Cycling Club held its first Newcomers’ Race of the road season on Saturday over a course from the St. Kilda terminus to the top of the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery Hill and return. The course had to be covered twice, making about five miles in all. There were 12 starters, the field being divided into three bunches, C. Wilson, E. Annand, D. Lough, R. Stevenson and G. Hetherington being on the limit of one minute, C Webb, R. Shepherd and I. Barlow on half a minute, and the scratch men being D. Blagdon, T. Callendar, J. Nicol and P, Maitland. The first rider to turn at the top of the hill was Annand, who was closely followed by Wilson and Hetherington. A little way behind was R. Shepherd, who had left his bunch and was fast making up his handicap. D. Blagdon was the first of the scratch men to turn. At the next turn at St. Kilda the first three turned in the same order, Shepherd now being right on their wheels. At this stage Barlow retired, the only one to do so. Nicol and Blagdon, two of the scratch men, were now working together in fifth and sixth places. Second time round at the top turn saw Shepherd in the lead from Annand and Wilson, closely followed by Hetherington, Blagdon and Nicol. The others were a little way behind. Shepherd, Wilson and Annand fought out a close finish, the firstnamed winning by a length, half a wheel being between Wilson and Annand, with the scratch men about half a minute behind. Result:— R.
