SATURDAY’S MATCHES OLD BOYS TAKE THE LEAD High School Old Boys took the lead in the senior hockey competition on Saturday when Training College was defeated by 7 goals to 1. Albany also had a victory over Technical Old Boys by 6 goals to 2, and is now equal in the competition with University A. which had a bye on Saturday. The third match was that between University B and Collegiate, which was won by the former by 5 goals to 1. OLD BOYS v. TRAINING COLLEGE Training College did not look like being beaten so roundly when the game against High School Old Boys was commenced at Tonga Park, and it was just the better combination shown by the Old Boys’ forward line and the failure of College to grasp the opportunities olfered that caused the result. There appeared to be little to choose between the teams during the* first 10 minutes of play but after that time Old Boys bdgan to show greater penetrating power and went nearer the goal than their opponents. There was one occasion when Corbet, playing inside-right for College, should have scored, for the goal was open, but he failed with the shot. The scoring was opened by Edginton, who hit hard from near the edge of the circle. Almost immediately Old Boys returned to the College circle, where Webb, playing centre-forward, went in alone to score. The same player found another opening a few minutes later, and Old Boys were 3 up Towards half time College made a greater effort, and Bolting took the ball down on the left wing, sending across for Hughes, who sent in a good shot. The half time score was Old Boys 3 goals, College 1. Corbet came close to scoring soon after the commencement of the second spell, but his effort was not supported. and play was cleared to midfield. At this stage. Low, playing in goal for Training College, appeared to overcome the nervousness shown in the earlier stages of the game, and he made a good save when Edginton took a shot at goal. He was unaole to get back quickly enough, however, to prevent Webb from following in to score. Webb was lucky with the shot, as the ball was almost beyond his reach when he struck. A few moments later Webb again returned to score. The next Old Boys attack was led by Edginton. who was too fast for the College full-back, and he went right through to score. Play for a while was poor on both sides, though Old Boys had the better of the exchanges, and it was only the excellent work of Low that prevented several goals. College went through to Old Boys’ circle, and Corbet had a shot which Gallon cleared. Hughes attempted to score following in, but Gallon was again too quick for him, and the ball went out to the Old Boys’ forwards, who raced through on the call of time for Edginton to score again. The game ended:— High School Old Boys 7 goals. Training College .. .1 goal. Messrs T. H. Mulholland and H. Sew Hoy were umpires. Albany v. Technical Old Boys Playing on a good ground at Tonga Park, under favourable weather conditions. Albany had the better of Technical Old Boys, and secured a victory by six goals to two. Honours were even in the first portion of the game, and both sides looked like scoring. On two occasions Technical narrowly failed to net shots, and twice Albany was in a handy position, but lost the opportunity by the centres going astray. Albany scored the first goal when Rennick slipped in a fast shot during a melee in the circle, Albany’s next score came from a successful penalty bully by Shrimpton. Technical’s response was ,ot long delayed, Robertson beating the defence in good style. From this stage the superiority of the Albany forwards began to make itself apparent, and for the remainder of the half Technical was kept much on the defensive. Just before half time Albany scored a third goal, Stewart shooting after a fine concerted rush by the forwards, After the recommencement of play Albany continued to hold Technical in check, Rennick finally scoring. Technical then attacked, and Albany failed to clear a shot properly, and Robertson returned the ball to score. This heartened Technical, and several promising breaks were made, but without success. In the last 10 minutes of play Albany scored two additional goals, Shrimpton and Rennick making the shots. The final score was: Albany .. .. . 6 goals. Technical Old Boys 2 goals. Messrs A. C. Barnes and L. Joseph were the umpires. University B v. Collegiate The first half of the game between University B and Collegiate, .played at the Oval, was not productive of i good hockey, both sides being unable to get control, and the stick work generally being poor. University showed a marked improvement in the second spell, and had charge of the game for the greater part of the time. Carr gave a good display in goal for Collegiate, while Boyd, Smith, and Shaw were the most prominent members of the University side. Smith and Lawry each scored two goals for University and Alexander one, while Johnson scored for Collegiate. The game ended; University B , . - 5 goals. Collegiate .. .. 1 goal. Dr Monheimcr and Mr P. Paterson were umpires. Second Grade T.C.0.8. 4. Albany B nil. Colts 9, Y.M.C.A. 1. University D 3, Albany C nil. WOMEN’S MATCHES The two women's matches were productive of excellent hockey, the KingsOtago game, which was won by Kings by two goals to nil, being a particularly fine exhibition. University defeated Dunedin by three goals to one in a match in which the losers were unfortunate. Kings v. Otago From the outset of the game between Kings and Otago, which was played, at Logan Park, the teams appeared fairly well matched. Kings having, perhaps, the more finished forward line, while Otago's halves gave a very fine display. B. Mackie was prominent in the Otago half line, and she was always dangerous to the opposition R. Morton played a fine full-back game for Otago, but E. Symonds and M. Fisher, Kings full-backs were equally good, E. Symonds being one of the most outstanding players in the match S. Morton played inside-left for Otago but did not show up to the same advantage in this position as in the left-wing position, where she played the previous Saturday. Both of Kings goals wore scored by A. Harley. The game ended:— Kings .. . •. .. 2 goals. Otago .. .. • ■ Nil. Mr G. Silver was the umpire University v. Dunedin University won its match against Dunedin at Logan Park by three goals to one. University had one goal up at half time. Dunedin having no score, but equalised soon after the commencement of the second spell. The match was very evenly contested, and the winning goals were not obtained by University until just before time. The game resulted: — University 3 goals. Dunedin 1 goal. Mr R. S. Wallace was umpire. BI Grade Brighton 8, Carlton nil. Dunedin 4 Kings 1. 811 Grade Y.W.C.A. 5, Otago II 4. I
