BALCLUTHA
Rugby Football Considerable interest was shown in the senior Rugby match Clutha y. Clinton, which was played at the Balclutha Show Ground on Saturday, m fine weather. Each team had scored one win in the two previous matches played this season, and, as Clintons victory the previous Saturday had been over Crescent, the winner of last season’s competition, it was thought that Clutha would have a hard game. Clinton attacked from the kick-off. and a free kick being awarded for off-side play, J. Roy had no difficulty, in kicking a goal. McDonald and Miller (Clinton) put in a good parsing rush, which was stopped by McFeeters. At this stage Brown, who was playing a sound half-back game for Clintmi, was injured and had to go 3e J n S re * placed by R. McNee. The Red backs (Clutha) then got going, but a free kick to the Blacks (Clinton) relieved the pressure. Clinton were penalised for off-side play, and Moffat kicked a good penalty goal (3 —3). The Black® were penalised shortly after, but Hill mused with the kick. Up and down play followed, until Shand (wing threequarter) got possession and put m a good run along the line before passing to Greenall, who romped over. Moffat missed with the kick at goal. (6 —3). After strenuous up and down play Shand found the line, and from an ensuing melee Gold picked up the ball and battled his way over to score. Shand's kick fell short (9—3). From a scrum Stephens sent the ball to Gold, who passed to Stephens, who scored neatly. Moffat kicked a goal.. The spell ended with the score 14 points to three in favour of Clutha. In the second spell the Blacks lost no time in attacking strongly, but a certain score was spoiled by wild kicking. At this stage Stephens (the Red half-back) had to go off. and W Roy replaced him. Then Henderson started a passing movement, showing good pace, and transferred to McDonald, who passed to Shand, and the latter ran in to score well. Gold s kick at goal missed 17 points to 3. From play m Clutha’s twenty-five McLachlan made a good run. and, transferring to K. Orr the latter scored. Roy s kick at goal missed. 17 points to 6. Shoitly before time G. Henderson, threequarter. took play to the Black line, and Henderson dashed over to score a good try. Taking the kick, he goaled, the game ending in a win for Clutha bv 22 points to Clinton’s 6 points. ’Mr L J. Edwards was the referee.
