THE DUNEDIN MAYORALTY

10 I’l IE EDITOR

Sir,—As one who has known the Rev. E. T. Cox ever since his University days in Auckland, I should like to express here my regret that the citizens of Dunedin have not seen fit to retain his services as Mayor. I know nothing about the gentleman who has been chosen in preference to him. but he must be pretty good to justify the rejection of a Christian scholar like Mr Cox in his favour. My humble opinion is that Mr Cox has never been really understood by Dunedin residents. For example, he is gifted with a very keen sense of humour, and I just make the suggestion that the Scottish residents of your city may sometimes have taken what he has said far too seriously. His calling does not tend to make him in any way different in that respect; he is just his natural self. That he possesses decided ability for the position cannot be for a moment doubted. Every University student knows that to secure first-class honours in arts as an extra-

mural student Is no mean achievement: and that is what Mr Cox did a few years back. His qualities may best be judged by the character of his opponents’ criticisms. When, for instance, it is objected _to him that he makes use of unparliamentary expressions at his public meetings, we feel inclined to ask the objector whether he never let worse expressions escape his own lips.—l arm etc,, Roxburgh.
