Towards the end of the year Southland had been visited by a series of heavy floods, which had caused considerable damage to river banks and crops, A deputation of those interested in the matter had met the Minister of Public Works (Mr R. Semple) at Invercargill, and had received an assurance that money would be made available for carrying out a scheme of protective works. The necessity for an experimental farm for Otago and Southland had not been lost sight of. Mr Henry Smith had been appointed to meet officers of the Agricultural Department, and it was pleasing to be able to report that there was a possibility of a farm being established. It was suggested that if the date was not acceptable to the Mackenzie Sub-union, a game could possibly be arranged with the Waitaki Sub-union. Transport was the. major difficulty which the schools had to meet, but the suggestion had been put forward that all the country boys be brought into town, and that four or five teams be selected, with the teams as evenly matched as possible.
