FOUR EAGER IMMIGRANTS CONDITIONS IN JUGOSLAVIA (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Mar. 29. Four smiling Croatian girls, wearing the brightly-coloured dresses so popular in their country were among the most eager passengers arriving by the Wanganella to-day. Two have come to join their father, who settled in New Zealand seven years ago, and the others were accompanied by their uncle, a naturalised British subject, who recently spent three years in Jugoslavia “It couldn’t be worse,” was the remark of the uncle, Mr J. Zegura, when questioned about Jugoslavia. “Everything is taxed, wages are very low, and the long hours are very hard on the people,” he said. The Jugoslavs were being sadly over-taxed tc meet the burden of the race for armaments, Mr Zegura said. A telegram of 12 words, which costs 2s, was taxed Is.
