Mr C. J. L. White returned from Christchurch yesterday afternoon. Mr W. E. Reynolds was a passenger for Christchurch by the mid-day express yesterday. Mr W. G. Sir Charles and Lady Statham, who have been visiting Dunedin on the occasion of the ninety-third birthday of Sir Charles's father, the Rev. Canon Statham, returned north by the midday express yesterday. Mr J. A. Roy, M.P. for Clutha, who arrived by the express from Balclutha yesterday, attended a luncheon at the Somerset Lounge and addressed a meeting of the Dunedin Young Men’s Branch of the National Party, At an ordinary meeting of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons, held this week (says our London correspondent, writing on March 12), a diploma in ophthalmic medicine and surgery was granted jointly with the Royal College of Physicians to Dr E. W. B. Griffiths, M. 8., Ch.B.N.Z.. Otago and R.L.O.H, After concluding their revivalist mission in the Caversham Baptist Church this evening, the Rev. E. E. Shelhamer and Mrs Shelhamer will leave for Auckland to conduct a mission before leaving for Australia, where Mr Sbelhamer will lead an Easter convention. After touring Australia and South Africa, Mr and Mrs Shelhamer will go to Urundl. a Belgian mandated territory in the Congo, where their daughter is a medical missionary. The Air Ministry announcement issued on March 9 (reports our London correspondent) states that the following are granted short service commissions as acting pilot officers on probation with effect from February 19:— C. J. E. Chamberlain (Papatoetoe), C. G. Christophers and D. N. Milligan (Wellington), M. S, Ferguson (Auckland). E. D. Gimson (Christchurch), J. N. Mackenzie (Dunedin), and K, W. Trigance (Timaru). Mr R. E. Cairns, of Lyttelton, has been appointed Government representative on the Lyttelton Harbour Board as from April 27, In place of Mr W, T. Lester, whose term will expire next month. Mr Cairns, who is a waterside worker, is a member of the Lyttelton Borough Council, to which he was elected unopposed at a by-election two years ago. He has served on the council as chairman of the Gas and Electricity Committee, He is also secretarytreasurer of the Lyttelton branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. The Union Airways liner Karoro left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning -for Christchurch, Blenheim., and Palmerston North with Messrs D, Smith, G. W. Carrington, Mr and Mrs J. Wallace for Wellington, and Mr D. Murdoch for Palmerston North. The Kotuku arrived at 3 p.m, from the north with Messrs W. Wilson, H. Riggs, A. Jones, A. Palmer from Wellington, and Mrs H. Wootton and Miss E. Henderson from Christchurch. Members of the Dunedin Electrical Traders' Association met in the Savoy lounge yesterday morning to bid fare* well to Mr M. C, Henderson on the occasion of his retirement from the position of city electrical engineer. Mr H. P. Desmoulins (president of the association) presided over the gathering. Presenting Mr Henderson with a chair, suitably engraved, Mr Desmoulins expressed the traders’ deep appreciation of the many courtesies received from him during his term of office. Other speakers expressed thanks for his kindly help and service. Mr Henderson. in reply, expressed his gratitude for the kind thoughts expressed by the speakers and for the gift given him, and said he would always look back with pleasure to the days when he was actively associated with the traders. 1
