EARLY VOLUNTEERING IN OTAGO Dime din Volunteer Artillery Corpa

Daily Telegraph, 30/11/63. —Wo understand that the model gun to be used in the big-gun drill of the Dunedin Volunteer Artillery Corps is now completed and, ready for “service.” A meeting of'the corps is called for Tuesday. at the Shamrock Hotel, to fix the drill days. Dunedin Naval Brigade

9/12/63.-—About 30 members of this newly-created force assembled for drill at the Drill Shed at 7 o’clock yesterday evening, which may be considered as a highly satisfactory muster. The various preparatory movements were gone through very satisfactorily, under the supervision and instruction of Sergeant Stevens, late colour-sergeant of H.M. 70th Regiment. 11/12/63.—Yesterday afternoon, the Prince Alfred left Port Chalmers for Sydney, and among her passengers are 32 volunteers for the north, under the command of Captain Wilson, who will be transhipped into the Phoebe at Nelson for Auckland. We understand that Captain Wilson has succeeded in raising the full complement of 50 volunteers for the war, and goes north to take command of his company. Dunedin Volunteer Rifle Company 16/1/64.—A meeting of this company was held last evening, after the usual parade, at the Shamrock Hotel, for the purpose of electing officers to fill the vacancies caused by recent resignations. Captain Moss occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance of the company. A letter was read from Lieutenant Leggatt, resigning his commission. It was resolved that the secretary be instructed to answer the letter, and, on behalf of the company, wish Mr Leggatt every success and prosperity in his new sphere of life. It was also resolved that the company receive the resignation of Mr Gillies with regret. The election of commissioned and non-commissioned officers was then proceeded with by ballot, with the following results: —Lieutenant, Mr O’Meagher; ensign, Mr O’Loughlin; sergeants, Messrs Jenkinson, Somerville, and Robertson; corporals, Messrs Matheson and Wilson, treasurer. 21/1/64.—A meeting of members of this corps took place yesterday evening at the Shamrock Hotel, at which, after arriving at a decision relative to the uniform to be adopted by the members. the election for the captaincy of the corps was proceeded with, and Mr C. G. Ross was elected by the unanimous voice of the meeting. The meeting was then adjourned until Friday next at half-past 7 o’clock, for the revision of the rules.
