FOOTWEAR TRADE

THE GOVERNMENT’S PLANS PROTECTION OF INDUSTRY EXTERNAL NEGOTIATIONS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. An indication of the plans of the Government for the assistance of the footwear industry of the Dominion was given by the Minister of Finance (Mr W. Nash) when replying in the House of Representatives to-day to an urgent question which he was asked by Mr R. A. Wright (Ind., Wellington Suburbs). Mr Wright said that because of the continued slackness in the trade, the position of boot manufacturers had been and still was very critical. “ We are negotiating with the Australian Government for a new trade agreement with that country,” said the Minister in reply. “In regard to footwear, in particular, we have communicated with the Government of the United Kingdom and their representatives here. The Trade Commissioner is now examining the whole position to see what procedure should be followed that would be the least harmful to the United Kingdom and at the same time meet the desires of the Government to protect the footwear industry in New Zealand.”
