START OF WORK DELAYED
WATERSIDE UNIONISTS’ ACTION MOVE TO SECURE FRESH LABOUR (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. Members of the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union, after accepting employment on the ship, decided this morning not to work the Union Steam Company’s motor ship Waiana on her arrival from Portland late this afternoon, but to begin at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning. Regarding the unionists’ action as a breach of the rules of the Auckland Waterside Labour Bureau, the shipowners have decided to call for fresh labour in the morning.
The Waiana berthed at 5.30. Nine gangs had been engaged at the 10 a.m. labour call to begin work at 6 p.m. As the result of the workers decision to postpone the start until the morning no work was done tonight, the Waiana being the only ship affected.
