RAIN in south canterbury benefit to crops and PASTURES (Per United Press Association).TIMARU, Dec. 2. The long, dry spell, which bad become serious in South Canterbury, broke this afternoon, when light rain set in. Wheat crops m particular have suffered considerably. As a result of the threatened feed shortage, the freezing works opened to-day, whichis about a week earlier than usual. The country has been so dry that mmiy farmers have been carrying water for household purposes for some time, and not a few have been obliged to visit friends in town for the purpose of bathing. , ' , The position in regard ta the town water supply was also causing concern, and to-day the council prohibited the use of hoses for garden purposes. The publication of this notice was a good omen, however, for a few horn's after it appeared rain commenced to fall, and was still falling to-night. At the moment there has not been sufficient to do much good, but there is every indication that the fall will continue.
