“FOR VALOUR”
POPULAR COMEDY TEAM Film stars are apt to become slaves to their own screen personalities, and only the most courageous of them dare to break away from it now and then. Ralph Lynn is the latest person to defy convention by dropping his monocle! For nearly 30 years this famous comedian has worn his monocle in every appearance he has made, both on the stage and screen. The film in question is “For Valour,” in which* he is costarred with Tom Walls, who loses his moustache, and it is a film which lovers of good comedy, put over as only these two stars can put it over, should not miss. It will be shown at the Empire Theatre to-day. Tom Walls plays a dual role in the film. He appears as both son and father in the same scenes, and filmgoers will have the uncanny experience of watching the suave Tom Walls, complete with moustache and side-whiskers, remonstrating with a wily old bird of some 65 years, clean-shaven and double-chinned. The story, by that prince of comedy authors, Ben Travers, concerns the adventures of a wily financier whose father, an old lag, haunts his stately home in order to obtain money from Major Pyke (Ralph Lynn), a doddering old soldier, whose life he saved in the Boer War, and who, out of recognition, brings up the convict’s son with his own grandson. In order to prevent the police becoming suspicious, the financier forbids the house to his father, and also the friend of his childhood—the major’s grandson, who has been getting on the wrong side of the law. [
So these two decide to interfere with the financier’s crooked scheme;?, with dire and hilarious results. Tlw six finalists in the Utopia Clubjn “Miss Otago of 1937” contest wilil parade on the stage every evening; during this film’s presentation. l
