CANADIAN BY-ELECTION

CONTEST FOR VICTORIA LIBERAL SUCCESSFUL VICTORIA (British Columbia), Nov. 30. Mr R. W. Mayhew (Liberal) was elected at the Victoria by-election, necessitated by the death of Mr S. F. Tolmie. It is a Government gain. The voting resulted: Mr Meyhew 9117. Mr McKelvey (Conservative) 7367. Mr King Gordon (Commonwealth Federation) 6277. Mr Bennett personally led the campaign with the charge that the Government had a secret agreement with the United Kingdom to abolish the preference pacts to permit a trade treaty with the United States as a world peace gesture. The Government leaders protested that there was no agreement, and guaranteed that they would protect Canadian interests.
