PARTIAL ECLIPSE OF MOON

VISIBLE IN NEW ZEALAND TO-MORROW A partial eclipse of the moon will be visible in New Zealand on November 18. The following are the circumstances of the eclipse:— Moon enters penumbra .. 6hr 9.lmin Moon enters umbra .. 7hr 37.1 min Middle of the eclipse .. Bhr 18.8 min Moon lfeaves umbra .. 9hr 00.5 min Moon leaves penumbra 10hr 28.7 min Magnitude of the eclipse 0.150 (moon's diameter. 1.0.). The sun throws behind the earth a dark cone of shadow, which reaches a long way beyond the path of the moon, and if it happened that the path of the moon lay precisely in the ecliptic, then at every full moon it would pass through this shadow and be totally eclipsed. Since, however, the moon's path makes a' small angle with the ecliptic, it usually passes a little above or below the cone of shadow and escapes eclipse From time to time, however, the moon crosses the ecliptic just about the time of full, and then a partial or total eclipse occurs and is visible over the whole of that hemisphere of the earth which is at the moment turned away from the sun and is facing towards the moon.
