The Weather and Crops

Some of the crops in the district are being dried up through lack of moisture. The Arrow irrigation scheme is proving a God-send to some of the farmers, who are fortunately placed. If the drought does not break soon, however, some of the crops on the higher levels will be ruined. It is the driest season on record.

Lake'Wakatipu Steamer Service Although the returns from the Lake Wakatipu steamer service showed a loss of £3743 for the year ended March 31, due largely to the inauguration of the road services and capital expenditure on the Glenorchy wharf, it is interesting to note the returns in the years 1930 to 1936. For the year ended March 31. 1930, the loss was £6902. This was reduced to £5266 in 1931 £2003 in 1932, and £336 in 1933. (These were the slump years.) For the year ended March 31, 1934, a profit of £7 was shown, increasing to £378 in 1935 and £1199 in 1936. In view of the fact that the rail passenger service between Lumsden and Kingston has been eliminated except in holiday time, all transport will go by road in future and consequently the steamer service will probably show further losses in the future. However, in view of the restricted train service the local bodies have invited the Railways Department to send an officer to Queenstown to go into the whole matter.

Opportunity was taken at the function to make certain presentations to the members of the Fire Brigade, including two-year service bars and certificates. In making the presentations, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Overton) referred to the excellent service rendered by both organisations. The Dand, which was recently re-formed, supplied a much-felt want in the town. The Fire Brigade was a very essential institution in the town. Its members gave voluntary as well as efficient service. The Mayor made a strong appeal for new members to fill vacancies which had recently occurred. The first presentation was that of a badge to Superintendent W. H. Nelson, in recognition of his services as oastpresident of the Southern Districts' Sub-association. The Curtis Cup (oneman event, for yearly competition) was presented to Foreman A.- E. Farrant.
