Cricket A Palmerston cricket team travelled to Macrae’s on Saturday, and secured a comfortable win over the home side. Macrae’s, batting first, compiled 67 (Innes 47, Phelan 10; Perriam four for U, Domigan two for 34, Pearson three for 18). Palmerston replied with 167 (Buttars 21 retired, Lang 22 retired, Domigan 20 retired, Pearson 22 retired, Hayes 20 retired, Pope 17, Murdoch 16; Innes one for 4. W. Fraser one for 5). WAIKOUAITI A. and P. Association A special meeting of the Management Committee of the Waikouaiti A. and P. Association was held on Saturday evening, the president (Mr A. Fell) presiding over a fair attendance of members. The principal business of the meeting was a study and revision, where considered necessary, of the show schedule. Several new classes were arranged, alterations made in others, and a jubilee show medal allotted to each section. Several new members were elected, and a donation was made to the St. John Ambulance Association’s appeal for funds. TEMUKA The Downlands Water Supply Scheme For the present, the work of the Committee of Investigation in connection with the Downlands irrigation scheme has been brought to a conclusion. From inquiries it would seem that in some districts there were some farmers who are somewhat pessimistic regarding the future possibilities of the scheme, and are not anxious to be included among the other rate-

payers who have given their consent. The four county councils, concerned have declared areas in their respective counties as water supply districts, and as matters stand at present the finalising rests with the local bodies mentioned. Any further extensions of areas to be served now lie with the County Council in whose county any particular property is situated. Several ratepayers in districts west and south-west of Timaru have asked to be brought into the scheme, and it is confidently anticipated that others will follow their example. The chairman of the Committee of Investigation states that after the pipes have been laid to deliver a volume of water sufficient to meet the requirements of any • given area it will not be possible to extend the area further, and thus obtain a larger volume of water than that allowed for, but provision will be made to deliver more water than is at present required within the present area. Meanwhile, it is understood that as soon as word is received from the Government to proceed with the work, all necessary material will be ordered, and the number of connections to be made will be determined. LAWRENCE Cricket In the South Otago cricket competition on Saturday Lawrence peat Owaka at Lawrence by 85 runs. Owaka compiled 85 (G. Chapman-Cohen 21, A. Rae 12). Lawrence replied with 170 (J. Cavanagh 54, B, Hart 48, R. Batchelor 20 not out, C. Jackman 11). Bowling for Lawrence B. Hart took three wickets for 7 runs, R. Hancock two for 14, J. Cavanagh two for 29, J. Ambler one for 9, E. Winchester one for 14, and for Owaka K. Calder took six for 42, A. Taylor three for 46, and A. Brownlie one for 22.
