CHECKING A NOXIOUS WEED

TO THE EDIXOB Sir,—Please allow me space to draw public attention to' the prevalence of a noxious weed called hemlock, not unlike the wild carrot. This pest has spread rapidly in Oamaru in the last few vears, and has made its appearance in some of the vacant sections and gullies, arid has found its way to the Tolara district. If this weed is not checked the ratepayers will live to regret their neglect. The reputation that Oamaru holds as a town of beauty should be considered, and any threat to that reputation and to property should be removed. I would suggest to those who are troubled with this pest that they grub or cut at intervals until the end of November, and again later to prevent its running to seed.—l am, etc., John Welch. Oamaru, November 4.
