AMATEUR SWIMMING

OTAGO CENTRE'S CARNIVAL FAST TIMES RECORDED GOOD PERFORMANCE BY R. GEDDES Large entries in the majority of events and a high all-round standard of performance were the features of the opening carnival of the season conducted last evening in the Municipal Baths by the Otago Swimming Centre. For early in the season times were surprisingly good, and in, at least two of the senior races were such as to Indicate that the winners will be turning in championship figures before many weeks are past. Especially was this the case in the 100 Yards Breaststroke Handicap, in which the exOtago and New Zealand champion Reg. Geddes, off scratch, and conceding as much as 18sec to the limit markers, gained first place both in his heat and in the final. His time in the heat was 74 4-ssec, and in the final he clipped another two-fifths of a second off these figures. Another good race was the invitation 220 Yards Handicap, which was won by J. Clulee after an exciting contest with D. Reid and J. D. O'Driscoll - - to the commencement of the racing the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) presented to Miss I. Purdie the jewel casket forwarded to her by the Eastern Suburbs and Waitemata Clubs (Auckland) to commemorate her re-cord-breaking swim over 220 yards last Easter, at Auckland. Mr Cox then declared the carnival open, and congratulated the Otago Centre on the work it was doing for the youth of the province. An interesting exhibition of fancy swimming was given by Mr James ftewart, a member of the Central xecutive of the Royal Life-Saving Society, London.
