Ministerial The Minister of Public Works (Mr R, Semple) left Wellington last night for the South Island. To-day he will inspect the Ashburton irrigation scheme with members of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. To-inor-row he will discuss the terms of the new contract between the Christchurch City Council and the State for the supply of electric power to that city, and on Saturday he will officially declare open for traffic the new main highway between Canterbury and the West Coast over, the Lewis Pass. Mr Fred Waite. M.L.C., was a nassenger for Wellington by the through express yesterday. Dr D. G. McMillan, M.P., returned from Wellington by the express yesterday afternoon. Mr J. W. Scurr returned from a visit to Christchurch by yesterday afternoon's express. Dr Geoffrey Flavell, son of Mr H. A. Flavell, has received an appointment as house physician at St. Bartholomew's Hospital to Dr Gow. who is physician to the Duke of Kent. Dr Flavell is the editor of St. Bartholomew's Hospital Journal. In appreciation of her services as organist, a gold wristlet watch was presented to Miss Alison Allan at the seventieth anniversary celebrations of the Merton Presbyterian Church. Members of Miss Allan's family have officiated as organist at the church for nearly 50 years. The Union Airways liner Kotuku left the Taieri airport at 8.15 yesterday morning for Christchurch, Blenheim, and Palmerston North with Mr N. McKinnell for Christchurch, Mr Robert Hudson and Mr S. T. Hudson through passengers for Auckland. The Karoro arrived from the north at 1 p.m. with Mrs W. S. Roberts and Mrs A. Thomson from Wellington and Miss N. O'Leary, Mr Gage Campbell, and Mr F. C. Christie from Christchurch.
