BLACKMAIL ALLEGED

MAN ACCUSED OF SERIOUS CRIME FURTHER CHARGES PENDING (Per United Press Association) " CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 22. "Blackmail, is it?" queried Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when Joseph Dyer appeared before him. Dyer was charged that, between November, 1933, and August 6, 1937, with intent to extort money, he accused a man of the serious crime of indecent assault on a male. Dyer was remanded to appear on November 1. " I ask that bail be made very substantial, as this is a serious crime," said Detective Sergeant Holmes when an application was made for bail. The detective sergeant added that two other charges of a different nature would be preferred. The magistrate fixed bail at self in t £3OO, with one surety of £3OO, a condition being that Dyer should report daily to the police. On the application of the police, the name of the person from whom it was alleged Dyer had attempted to obtain money, was suppressed.
