THE NEW FREEDOM
TO THE EDITOR Six*. —It seems to me, if my observations are correct, that freedom for school children in New Zealand has degenerated into unbridled licence. Today the child must not be checked. No matter how much pain he maycause other people by his waywardness, he must not be punished. Recently in one of the city streets a . workman was busy laying down a concrete channel. There appeared on the scene a boy about ten or eleven years of age. Quietly the workman asked the lad not to walk on the fresh concrete. With an air of silent contempt, the boy danced on the timber protecting the concrete, and broke it. Result! Four hours’ work was wasted, and the workman had to set to work and repair the damage. The young outlaw did not even receive a thrashing he so much deserved. Another advertisement for the new freedom. —I am. etc Citizen.
