STATE GOVERNMENTS
THE AUSTRALIAN SYSTEM *MR SEMPLE TAKEN TO TASK (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. “ I hear that your Mr Semple has been saying that he could not understand why we had State Governments in Australia instead of a centralised authority,” said Mr M. F. Bruxner, Deputy Premier of New South Wales, on his arrival by the Aorangi. He was referring to a statement reported to have been made by Mr Semple after his recent visit to Australia. "It would have been better had Mr Semple taken into consideration the facts before he spoke. What he did not pause to think was that while New Zealand has a population of 1,500,000, New South Wales alone has a population of 2,500,000, with an area of 300,000 square miles. Its Budget is £ 60,000,000 annually, compared with New Zealand’s £40,000,000,'50 that if Mr Semple finds his own job a full-time one in New Zealand, what must it be in each of the Australian States? Moreover, New South Wales is growing, and will be a bigger place than New Zealand ever will.” ’
